In fact, they are the safest and most efficient way to transport products like oil and natural gas liquids. All our pipelines and facilities are designed, constructed, and operated in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
Protecting our workers, the environment, and the community
Through our Operational Excellence program and compliance with all regulatory requirements, we've established a track record we're proud of. When it comes to pipelines, we use a defined process that includes routine inspections, maintenance activity, and testing to check that our pipelines are operating safely.
There are sensors which operate continuously, night and day, to monitor the operating conditions of our pipelines. These sensors are overseen by our dedicated employees 24/7. We also conduct ground inspections to get a detailed view and aerial inspections for a broad view, all to ensure that our pipelines are operating safely.
What is ground disturbance activity?
- Any activity that results in a disturbance of the earth to a depth of more than 30 centimeters.
- Any activity that reduces the earth cover over any pipeline to less than the cover provided when the pipeline was installed.
- Cultivation activity to a depth greater than 45 centimeters (18 inches) below the surface of the ground.
If you suspect a leak...
In the unlikely event of an emergency, Keyera will immediately shut down the pipeline (if necessary) and activate our Emergency Response plan.
What to do:
- Shut-down and abandon any mechanized equipment and move as far away from the leak as possible, avoiding contact with escaping liquids and gases
- Move upwind
- Call 911
- Call Keyera's emergency line, which is located on the pipeline marker
- Follow instructions provided to you by Keyera and local emergency responders
- Warn others
What NOT to do:
- Touch or go near any liquid, gas, or vapour cloud
- Start your vehicle or any equipment that has an ignition source
- Smoke or light matches
- Make sparks
- Use any heating sources
- Turn on or off anything that may create a spark
- Operate or turn any pipeline valves
- Try to extinguish any flames or fires
